Review

Brake resistors in combination with a brake unit (interrupter) are used in case of need for rapid braking. When braking the electric drive, the braking resistor is connected to the bus of the DC link of the frequency converter and the energy from the electric motor that occurs during operation in generator mode is dissipated on it. The braking resistor protects the frequency converter from triggering protection due to overvoltage in the DC link and, accordingly, from stopping the drive.

The use of brake resistors is often mandatory for a number of applications of frequency converters, for example, for working with lifting and transport mechanisms (cranes, elevators, inclined conveyors, lifts), highly inertial applications (smoke pumps, centrifuges, roller shutters, traction mechanisms, transport trolleys), some machine applications (turning, drilling, grinding machines).
